Walked all over without a time limit. The crowds were heavy but that's typical for that time of day. I used a free audio guide off soundcloud. The sights were amazing. The app and ticket were easy to use.

Very comprehensive tour to get an overview of the city. The guide for the Acropolis and its museum, Dimitri, very knowledgeable and structured. The trip to the Temple of Poseidon was also well organized and the guide, George, during the bus ride told history and myths of the place. Lunch was fair and overall it was a good day.

Our trip was very nice. The audio guide we received on the way there was interesting, but also relatively sparse. GPS tracking for the guide is a nice idea, but it caused some tracks to skip. There was no way to listen to anything manually. Cape Sounion and the temple were beautiful. We had excellent weather and were able to watch the sunset before getting back on the bus. On the day of our trip, there were demonstrations in Athens, which is why the city center was closed off. It was a little difficult to get information about how the pick-up would work. Headout did not actively provide us with any information, so we had to search for it ourselves and contact the actual provider.

Quick trip, with stops to have excellent views of the temple. Also the time we were allotted inside was enough to get good pictures and know the place. The sunset is truly amazing.

  • Sunset factor: Many tours time your visit for golden hour at Cape Sounion. Watching the sun dip behind the Aegean with the temple’s Doric columns in silhouette is a highlight worth planning around.
  • Guided value: Archaeologist-led tours will introduce you to the myths of Poseidon and even stories from Homer’s Odyssey. Audio guides in multiple languages are available on select options if you prefer to explore at your own pace.
  • Combos & upgrades: Pair your Temple of Poseidon visit with the Acropolis, Parthenon, and Acropolis Museum for a full-day deep dive into ancient Greece. Some combos include entry tickets, headsets, lunch, or even a 2-day hop-on hop-off bus pass.

Temple of Poseidon

Location: Cape Sounion, 70 km southeast of Athens
Perched 60 meters above the Aegean Sea, this 5th-century BCE Doric temple was built to honor Poseidon, god of the sea. Of its original 34 columns, 15 still stand, forming one of Greece’s most dramatic coastal silhouettes.

Clifftop terrace & sunset point

Location: Surrounding the Temple of Poseidon
The rocky promontory offers panoramic views across the Aegean and surrounding islands. At sunset, the marble columns glow against the horizon making it one of the most photographed views in Attica.

Archaeological Site of Sounion

Location: Cape Sounion plateau
Beyond the main temple, the site includes fortification walls, ancient gateways, and remnants of smaller sanctuaries that once protected this strategic maritime outpost overlooking vital sea routes.

Temple of Athena Sounias

Location: Adjacent hill within the archaeological site
Less visited but historically significant, this sanctuary honored Athena. Though only foundations and column fragments remain, it reflects Sounion’s dual religious importance in antiquity.

Lord Byron’s graffiti

Location: One of the temple’s marble columns
In the early 19th century, poet Lord Byron carved his name into one of the temple’s marble columns during his travels in Greece. A passionate supporter of Greek independence from Ottoman rule, Byron later returned to fight for the cause. His inscription remains visible today.

Visitor tips

  • If you plan to travel to Cape Sounion from Athens on public KTEL buses, arrive at the departure point (Mavromateon Terminal) at least half an hour before so you don’t miss the bus.
  • Sunset is the highlight here, especially on half-day sunset tours. Arrive at least 30–45 minutes before golden hour to walk the site, find a good viewpoint, and avoid last-minute crowding near the cliff edge.
  • The terrain around the temple is uneven, with rocky paths and marble surfaces that can get slippery, especially at sunset. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes make a noticeable difference.
  • The temple was built from local marble. If you look carefully, you’ll see subtle color variations and weathering patterns shaped by over 2,400 years of coastal winds.
  • Cape Sounion is fully exposed, with little natural shade. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are useful year-round, particularly during summer departures.
  • Food and drinks aren’t typically included on half-day tours. If you’re visiting Lake Vouliagmeni, remember that lake entry and towel rentals may cost extra depending on your ticket type.
  • The best sunset photos aren’t directly in front of the temple but slightly to the side, where you can frame the columns against the open Aegean horizon.
  • Summer evenings can get busy, especially with multiple tour buses arriving around the same time. Booking in advance and choosing smaller-group options helps avoid overcrowding.
